The Bluescene
The Bluescene has been run by James Henderson since
2001.He was inspired by a venue of the same name
that ran at The Crown in Twickenham in the 1960s. Alexis Korner,
Lowell Fulson, Jeff Beck, The Strawbs, Free and many others
had performed there.
The Lion in Teddington has been its home
since January 2004, a welcoming and friendly Independent Free
House, owned and run by an exceptional couple, Don and Myfanwy
Witts.
To accommodate The Lion’s rapidly growing popularity
in the area, it was extended and refurbished last year, but
still retains its Victorian character. The music is great,
the food is excellent and The Lion has won several awards
for its real ales.
Bluescene gigs are on stage in The Lion’s function
room, an adjoining building with its own bar, great acoustics
and low-lit, intimate atmosphere. The musical standards are
high: Papa George, Steve Simpson, Zoot Money, Mickey Moody,
Jamie Marshall, Matt Schofield, Robin Bibi, Marcus Malone,
Honeyboy Hickling, Two Timers, The Spikedrivers and, from
the USA – Steve Arvey, Lightin’ Willie and Gregg
Wright.
Future
attractions include Tommy Allen & Trafficker, The Monday
Band, The Steve Simpson Band, The Marcus Malone Band, Giles
Hedley & the Aviators and Sam Kelly’s Station House.
On those Saturdays when there isn’t a Bluescene gig,
Don, an ardent music lover, presents free live music in the
bar – featuring the best solo and duo talent around.
